Introduction to Emails for Them

After creating a lead magnet for your email subscription page, your audience opts in to receive regular emails from you. Whatever should you tell them? Help educate and empower them, and, frankly, rarely sell to them.

Support and serve your audience through the email they have courageously provided you. Schedule emails to be sent every few days, where an entire sequence of four to five emails covers about ten days. The first sequence, like every other, has five emails, while the second sequence, like every other, has six emails.

The remaining four emails in each community nurture cycle sequence have a specific theme:

1. Audience Empowerment
2. Your Credibility
3. Teach Them Something
4. Someone You Admire
5. The Big Ask
6. Survey Says!

Each email subscriber is immediately placed at the beginning of each sequence upon subscription. At the end of each sequence, they are automatically moved to the next sequence. Ideally, they’ll never see most emails again, but they’ll be offered both small and big-ticket items unless they’ve already purchased them.

A Community Nurture System creates a journey for each audience member. It’s a workflow that builds a relationship over time. Take them on a journey with evergreen content, not a static newsletter.

The tone of this email is from a friend. Express yourself in a friendly way that appreciates their work. Create a connection with that fan by suggesting they schedule a free, 15-minute chat, using YouCanBook.Me.

Starting something new takes bravery. This email is your way to show support, when many in their lives don’t get what they are trying to do. By permitting them, they get a sense of belonging.

To convey this audience empowerment, consider writing a story-based email based on a personal experience. Otherwise, write about something that feels like a life lesson. The email should have a beginning setup, a middle lesson, and end with an inspirational statement that leaves them feeling understood and motivated.

This second email is your opportunity to showcase one of your platforms, like your website, podcast, or YouTube channel. They likely signed up through one of your articles or the link at the top of your homepage. You could direct them to a specific article they might not have seen. This email should demonstrate your expertise and establish you as someone worth listening to.

Eventually, you’ll be interviewed by reporters or other podcasters. Show them! This email is where you demonstrate your credibility by sharing that other reporters or podcasters consider you essential.

These emails may contain an external link to an interview, podcast, or blog post. Add your personality to this email, rather than a dry press release. Write about one of your clients’ stories if you haven’t yet been featured.

This third email aims to change their perspective on a key aspect of your content space. Make it a quick training lesson, a life hack that matters. The purpose of this email is to demonstrate your teaching capabilities and encourage them to act.

Walk them through something small and tangible. This is different than a life lesson. It should provide quick results.

Be witty and intriguing to draw them into the training. You can write a short email with a link to a training video, or a longer email up to 1,000 words that includes the training. Alternatively, please link to a landing page video that suggests a tiny next step that gives them something easy to do, which is extremely useful.

With this fourth email, you recommend something you love – an influencer, book, or low-cost product. You can use affiliate links by linking to the recommended book from your Amazon Associate account. As always, use the correct legal markings for affiliate links (I am not a lawyer, so I cannot offer legal advice, but you can Google it.)

The focus of this email is to show that we care about more than just selling our own products and services. If they buy the product, they will associate you with it. If it’s a good product, it’s a win-win situation.

You can present this recommendation straightforwardly or in a story-based format. The goal is for your fan to get to know what you love. Make sure to include the specific reasons why you love what you are recommending.

This last email, the ninth overall, is about your big-ticket item. It’s asking them to buy one of your more expensive products or services. Ask them to take the next step with you.

Ask them to buy your product or service. This email includes no stories because it’s time for them to act. Most other businesses don’t do this; instead, they rely on irregular sales emails, which often yield just as infrequent results.

If an audience member purchases this product, automatically tag them in your purchase process so that they never receive another email offer to buy it. Doing so is simply courteous. It’s also how you segment an email subscriber to be a contact for your great product or service.

Send this survey email every other sequence, approximately once a month. Why? Because you want a thoughtful, meaningful, and therefore valuable response from your audience.

Sending out a survey question in every sequence makes it routine for your fans, while every other sequence comes across as wanting your feedback rather than you appearing needy. It shows that you care about their opinions, what they think about, and what they want from you and your brand. These survey responses provide valuable insights into your audience’s needs.

There are so many questions to ask! Some answers will be multiple choice, others on a percentage scale, and still others will be a text response. Your analysis of audience responses will be everything you need to guide your business until next month.

Audio editing software is essential for producing high-quality audio content. Audacity is a popular and free option available for multiple platforms. GarageBand is another excellent free choice for Apple computers.

Additionally, there are paid audio editing software options, such as Adobe Audition and Hindenburg Pro. Adobe Audition offers a 7-day free trial, while Hindenburg Pro provides a 30-day trial, allowing you to assess which software best suits your needs.

These software packages are designed to be user-friendly, making it easy to learn and get started quickly.

To begin with, let’s review the essential equipment needed for podcasting. It’s important to note that using the built-in microphone on your laptop or computer is not advisable, as it tends to produce poor audio quality. You deserve a better sound experience!

A good starting point is any external microphone that connects to your computer or smart device. These typically provide clearer sound. If you have a pair of Apple AirPods, you’re already set with a decent microphone!

If you’re looking for a more advanced microphone, you don’t have to break the bank. There are many affordable options available. I recommend the Audio Technica ATR2100-USB or the Samson Q2U, both of which are available on Amazon for around $80 or less. (commissions earned).

Several excellent choices are available for investing in even higher-quality microphones. Personally, I upgraded to the Shure SM7B for my podcasts, but I also appreciate the Heil PR 40 (commissions earned). Both options are priced at around $400 each on Amazon.

It’s worth mentioning that high-quality microphones typically require an audio interface to connect to your computer, as they do not feature a USB connection. The interface allows you to plug in one or more microphones and connect them to your computer via USB.

For my setup, I have succeeded with the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 microphone interface (commission earned), which supports two microphones. Focusrite also offers other Scarlett interfaces that can accommodate multiple microphones.

In addition to the main microphone, you may also want to invest in accessories such as microphone stands, cables, pop filters, headphones, and potentially an inline pre-amplifier. I find the BeyerDynamic DT 770 Studio Pro Headset 80 Ohms (commission earned) to be incredibly comfortable for extended use. For a pre-amplifier, I recommend the well-respected Cloudlifter CL-1 pre-amplifier (commission earned).

To achieve a breakthrough video’s impact, consider it your opportunity to make a strong first impression on potential fans. Presenting yourself and your content in the best possible light is crucial. Therefore, these videos should demonstrate a high level of production quality.

Typically, a breakthrough video will necessitate the following elements:

• Studio-level production quality for both audio and video
• A professional appearance in both personal attire and studio setup
• The highest quality video editing you can provide, including effective use of B-roll and relevant images

Once you have established a base of fans, you should start creating community videos. These videos should have a casual and relatable vibe; live streams are a prime example of this format.

You can produce various other types of community videos in addition to live streams. These can be categorized into short-form and long-form videos. Short-form content, known as “shorts” on YouTube, typically lasts 59 seconds or less.

Other examples of short-form videos include:

• Announcements for upcoming events, such as live streams
• Question and answer sessions

On the other hand, a long-form community video may include a live-stream event that you broadcast simultaneously to your YouTube channel and various social media platforms. It’s advisable to recruit some of your most engaged fans as moderators for your YouTube channel. While you can personally handle any disruptive comments, having moderators will facilitate quicker resolutions to any issues, ensuring a better viewing experience for your audience.

Once you have established a solid fan base—determining the ideal number is a key business decision—you can start producing sales videos. Like breakthrough videos, these productions are professionally crafted and focus on a defined call to action.

Calls-to-action (CTAs) can take many forms, depending on your offerings. For instance, prompting fans to join your email list qualifies as a CTA, as do videos promoting your consultation services.

Typically, email subscriptions and consultations will serve as the initial two offerings in your product lineup. Over time, you may expand to include a foundational course titled “30 Days to…” followed by an advanced “Labs” course lasting 6-8 weeks. The foundational course will comprise recorded videos, whereas the advanced course will feature a weekly Zoom meeting for in-person interaction.

When beginning your video content journey, focus solely on breakthrough videos. These videos are crucial for connecting with viewers and helping them become fans of your brand. During this phase, you’ll work on establishing your brand identity through these initial breakthrough videos, which play a vital role in audience growth.

As you gain a significant number of fans—however many you choose to define as substantial—you can then progress to creating community videos. Live streams offer a fantastic chance to engage with your audience, where you can respond to questions that can later be converted into short-form community videos. Additionally, you can create more short-form content by sourcing questions from fan emails or comments on social media.

Shortly after launching community videos, you’ll begin producing sales videos. Your first sales video should promote your website’s email subscription page, and your second sales video will likely focus on your consultation landing page.

As you expand your product offerings, you’ll continue to create more sales videos. One potential addition could be an online course focused on fundamental topics, with subsequent offerings possibly covering advanced topics.

Once sales videos enter your strategy, the suggested long-term ratio for video types is as follows:

• 50% breakthrough videos
• 25% community videos
• 25% sales videos

However, you should initially concentrate on 100% breakthrough videos. After building a sufficient fanbase, aim for a balanced mix of 50% breakthrough and 50% community videos.

Establishing an online presence through a website is crucial for entrepreneurs. By building it yourself, you can avoid ongoing management costs associated with hiring professionals. Thankfully, creating a website is more manageable than you may assume.

To establish a website, you must first acquire a domain name, similar to obtaining an address for a home. Once you have the address, you can begin building your online presence.

There are three essential domain names you should consider purchasing:

1. Your business name
2. Your book title
3. Your superhero name

For example, if my business is Jon Friedl, LLC, I would secure domains like JonFriedl.com, JonFriedl.net, and JonFriedl.org. The COM version and the .NET and .ORG variations are particularly important to prevent others from misusing them. It is advisable to avoid buying domains that include dashes.

Next, purchasing a .COM domain for your book title is beneficial, although this can include dashes. This domain will often redirect to your main website, making it easier for people to access your content.

Your superhero name is your primary website, and all other domains redirect to it. For instance, my main site is YourAuthorPlatform.com, and I also own the .NET and .ORG domains. It’s crucial to select a descriptive domain that fans will easily remember.

Alternatively, you could use a domain based on your name, such as JonFriedl.com. However, this can limit your brand potential. A descriptive domain can simplify the initial stages of launching your business, while successful ventures often benefit from name recognition with a personal brand.

You can acquire these domains from various registrars, but I prefer GoDaddy.com for its user-friendly service. It’s best to avoid domains that are already registered. While some registrars may facilitate negotiations for taken domains, securing a name that someone else holds can become problematic.

Consider purchasing the domains for your children’s names as a thoughtful gift idea. When they grow older, these can become meaningful birthday presents that will bring delight.

Now that you have a URL, you can set up your website. Several approaches exist, but the cookie-cutter method is often the simplest and most efficient. This method allows you to avoid future upgrades or recurring fees with a webmaster.

To get started, consider purchasing a framework such as Astra or Genesis. Next, you’ll need to select a theme. If possible, opt for a premium theme to ensure better quality and support.

Numerous themes are available, so take the time to review your options and find one that resonates with your vision. Focus on the style rather than the specific colors, which can be determined later.

Your chosen theme will come with various features, many of which may not be utilized immediately. At the very least, ensure that it supports a blog for posting your articles, as everything else can be customized.

Once you’ve installed your framework and theme, you can explore your website’s design. The first step is to select a color scheme. Carefully consider your primary color; it may be helpful to consult an artistic friend or look online for inspiration.

Remember to choose a secondary color as well. Typically, this color is found on the opposite side of the color wheel from your primary color. You should also consider preferences like font styles and button types, which will enhance your site’s overall look and feel.

To proceed with your project, you must create three essential pages, which differ slightly from standard posts. These pages include:

• Homepage
• Privacy Policy
• Terms of Service
• About

On your homepage, please arrange the following sections in order:

• Channel name
• Value proposition
• Purpose statement
• What you offer
• Podcast episodes
• Latest website articles

Note that all sections, except for the podcast and article segments, are static and will remain unchanged unless you decide to modify them. On the other hand, the podcast and article sections will update automatically, a feature commonly available with most website themes.

The privacy policy and terms of service are important legal documents. While you can generate them using a free online service, consulting an internet lawyer to tailor them specifically to your business needs is advisable.

The About page should provide a brief description of your business. Although adding a photo of yourself is optional, it can help create a personal connection with your audience.

You’ll find a consistent footer at the bottom of every webpage across all pages and posts except for landing pages. This footer should include the following essential elements:

• Contact Information: Ensure you provide your business address, email address, and phone number, including voice and text options. Ideally, your business address should not be your home address; consider using a P.O. Box or a similar option. Until your official website launches, you can use a Gmail address, which should be updated to your business email immediately.
• Social Media Links: Include links to your active social media profiles to encourage engagement and connection with your audience.
• Copyright Notice: The copyright should state “Copyright” followed by the year your business was established, a dash, and the current year. For example, “Copyright 2024-2025” would be appropriate if your business started in 2024. It’s important to add your official business entity name after the copyright statement.

For legal compliance, consider including a statement such as, “As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases,” placed before or after the copyright notice.

Incorporating these elements into your footer will enhance your website’s professionalism and ensure that essential information is easily accessible to your visitors.

Your website is an essential asset for your business, and email addresses are another crucial asset that can be valued at approximately $100 each when collected effectively. To successfully gather emails from your audience, you need three key components:

Your chosen subscription service can help you create landing page templates for your website’s subscription page. There’s no need to design everything from scratch; these landing pages are typically streamlined without menus or footers, allowing viewers to focus solely on the highlighted offer.

Create a template for your posts that will remain unpublished while serving as a valuable tool for organizing your website articles. This template will save you time and ensure you include all essential elements in your articles, which are as follows:

• Title
• Introduction
• Embedded video
• Embedded podcast
• Article sections (4 or 5)
• Summary
• Related articles
• Previous and Next articles

After completing each article, you will produce a long-form video and a podcast episode. The placeholders in this template will assist you until you become proficient in creating both formats. Detailed instructions on this process can be found in other articles.

It’s advisable to structure your paragraphs with three sentences each, aiming for four to five paragraphs per section. However, as illustrated in this article with seven sections, there may be instances where exceptions are necessary.

Every third paragraph should incorporate a button directing readers to your email sign-up subscription page. Positioning these buttons regularly ensures that at least one is always accessible as readers navigate through your content.

Initially, you may not have related articles to reference, but over time, you will build a library of them. For example, the current piece may not feature related content, but you will soon add articles about crafting long-form videos and podcast episodes. Ultimately, you aim to provide a comprehensive list of related content with detailed descriptions for each section.

The final section of your article should offer links to the previous and next articles, a crucial component for optimizing search engine visibility. As search engines index your site, ensuring that every article is easily discoverable is key to your success. Therefore, ensure each article connects to its successor, forming a continuous link as you publish additional articles.

Ensure you view the website on a computer, tablet, or smartphone. If you don’t have access to a tablet or smartphone, you can adjust your computer’s browser window size to mimic the tablet format, then resize it further to resemble a phone format.

It’s important to note that approximately half of your audience will visit your site using a computer, while the other half will access it via mobile devices. While this article does not cover setting up a Google Analytics page, incorporating this tool will give you valuable insights into the number of viewers using each device and a range of other pertinent data.

Please note that several minor aspects have not been discussed here. Initially, your website will feature three main menu items:

1. An “About” page for your website
2. The name of your primary category
3. A “Contact” page

Additionally, two significant topics have not been covered: your online shop and plug-ins. Once you have products to sell, you will address the online shop. Plug-ins relate to your website’s framework and theme.

If you have authored a book, there’s a good chance you have already attracted a following. The data from your book sales should indicate the presence of readers, but have you had the chance to engage with them directly? Perhaps you’ve received a few reviews on platforms like Amazon.

You might have also hosted a book signing event at a local bookstore. That’s a significant accomplishment! However, consider the turnout—how many fans were there to support you?

This is not meant to critique your achievements. Having six reviews and a dozen attendees can indeed be commendable. As a point of reference, during my last live stream on YouTube, I averaged 62 concurrent viewers, received 79 messages during the broadcast, and garnered thousands of views over time.

Have you ever had fans recognize you and approach you? I have, and they can be quite surprising. For example, one fan once said to me, “Jon, my wife loves you! Could you stay for a moment? She’s just over there. I’ll go get her. Here, my son Zach will keep you company.” This is an example of the type of interaction that can occur.

Cultivating a fanbase can inspire authors to venture into entrepreneurship. Engaging with your fans, both online and in person, not only feels rewarding but also motivates you. You gain valuable insights into their preferences and opinions.

The more you interact with fans, the more inspiration you can find for your next writing project or, from an entrepreneurial perspective, for your next business initiative.

You might be an author who has written a nonfiction book on topics like history or business, or perhaps you delve into fiction, crafting stories in the realms of romance or science fiction. Regardless of your genre, connecting with your audience is essential; they are integral to your writing journey.

If your goal is to impact the world through your book, aligning yourself with your fans is vital. When you support them in return for their support, you foster meaningful relationships that can endure over time.

Engage with your audience by discussing relevant subjects, such as the intricacies of warp drive versus wormhole travel or hyperspace travel, similar to discussions held in my other ventures. You might also consider creating an online course that shares your knowledge, just as many successful entrepreneurs have done. Additionally, if you have a sizable following interested in historical political evolution, akin to the work of Heather Richardson Cox, you can provide valuable insights that resonate with their interests.

Take an active role in advocating for your fans. By listening to them and learning from their experiences, you contribute to mutual growth. Although you may encounter challenges along the way, supporting your audience is a commendable effort.

Establishing a shared purpose with your fans is key. Be a figure they can rely on and respect. Collaboration with your audience is essential to become that influential person within your community.

Success in writing is seldom a solitary endeavor. Together, you and your fans can create a supportive network. Indeed, some may become so close that they feel like family.

Waiting for someone else to come and improve our lives is not a solution. You have the potential to be the driving force your supporters need. Collaborate with them to bring about positive change.

Become the individual they trust and admire. Whether you’re writing fiction or providing business insights, focus on serving your audience—even if that means teaching them niche skills like how to repair antique socks.

Perfection isn’t a requirement, but effort is essential. You don’t need to travel back to 1964 Mississippi to advocate for voter registration, as many have done remarkable work for causes like this. If they can act, so can you.

Engage with your supporters and make your voice heard. Strive to make a difference in your community.

Start by identifying individuals who inspire you and who believe in your mission. Build a community of supporters who know, like, and trust you. Now is the time to foster connection and create something significant together.

We can explore the strategies and resilience that have enabled many entrepreneurs to cultivate a dedicated community of supporters. However, I will provide those examples in other contexts. If you identify as an introvert or as someone on the autism spectrum who prefers limited social interaction, there’s no need to worry. Tools like live streaming and podcasting can serve as effective alternatives.

As an author, you’ve already conquered the challenge of writing a book, demonstrating significant personal strength. Transitioning to entrepreneurship follows a similar path.

If you’re unsure how to create a podcast or record videos, don’t fret—we’ll go through it together. Becoming an entrepreneur is akin to writing; often, the apprehension you feel is primarily mental. With the right guidance, you can master these skills as well.

One of my key strengths is simplifying complex concepts so they are easy to understand. The Bluesky social media platform is becoming increasingly popular among authors and online entrepreneurs. Many authors are utilizing Bluesky to engage with their fans and foster a sense of community. If you want to explore Bluesky, consider its various features to enhance your interaction with followers.

Bluesky, a social media platform like X, previously known as Twitter, was introduced to the public in February 2024. Users can share posts of up to 300 characters, including text, images, and videos. The platform is accessible on desktop computers and through a mobile app for iOS and Android devices.

Originally, Bluesky started as a research project under Twitter before evolving into an independent entity, Bluesky Social. The initial logo featured a cloudy blue sky, but this was changed to a blue butterfly in December 2023. By February 2024, while still in open beta, Bluesky had already attracted three million users.

Registration opened to the public in February 2024, leading to fluctuations in user growth. This variability was partially attributed to events linked to Elon Musk, referred to by Bluesky Social developers as “Elon Musk Events” or EMEs, stemming from controversies and changes occurring on Twitter.

Notably, in August 2024, Bluesky saw a surge, gaining over four million users within a span of less than two weeks. On September 16 of the same year, it was announced that the user count had escalated to thirteen million. By the end of January 2025, Bluesky’s user base reached thirty million, alongside a milestone of one billion posts.

Bluesky incorporates a range of features, including:

• Posts
• Replies, reposts, and likes
• User profiles
• Various feeds, such as lists, personalized feeds, and Starter Packs
• A Discover Feed
• Moderation tools

Bluesky is designed to decentralize control, placing significant power in the hands of its users. It offers several advantages, including:

• Customized experiences within the social network
• Independence for creators from traditional platforms
• The promotion of a healthy ecosystem for developers.

As an author, it’s important to recognize that you don’t control where your fans spend their time. If they are active on platforms like X, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, WeChat, WhatsApp, YouTube, Substack, REDnote, Reddit, Discord, and others, it’s essential for you to engage with them there. 

This message isn’t about personal preferences; rather, it’s about understanding that our presence is dictated by our audience. Ultimately, we hope these fans will become our clients.

It’s also possible that your audience may not use social media at all. In such cases, you might encounter them at local events, swap meets, or conventions, such as Star Trek gatherings. As you build your fanbase, ask where they prefer to connect, and try to follow them to those locations.

Additionally, some of your fans may choose to interact on platforms like Bluesky. Once you begin collecting responses through an introductory survey, you can gauge their presence there. If I’ve found my audience on Bluesky, yours could be there as well.

Let’s explore how to use Bluesky together effectively.

Recently, a familiar face from the publishing industry joined Bluesky, and unfortunately, their approach didn’t yield the best results. While their reputation may remain intact, this situation illustrates a missed opportunity for community building on the platform.

For those considering joining Bluesky, there’s a useful takeaway here. Suppose you’ve been active on X/Twitter for several years and have meticulously tracked each tweet in a spreadsheet. You may want to apply a similar strategy for your posts on Bluesky.

With the launch of Bluesky, you might wonder about the best way to transition your content. You could, for instance, post all 12,500 of your past tweets at a pace of one every 36 seconds over the span of nearly four and a half days. While such an effort would certainly showcase your presence on Bluesky, it may not result in significant follower growth, as evidenced by this individual, who remained at around 6,500 followers despite their extensive posting.

In fact, I contacted this person when they reached about 3,000 posts, suggesting they reconsider their strategy, but I received no response. This experience highlights why such a rapid posting strategy may not be advisable.

Consider a different approach: if they had opted to post just once per hour, it would have taken approximately a year and a half to reach 12,500 posts. However, given my own experience of gaining 2,500 followers from 40 posts on Bluesky, this individual could have potentially amassed around 750,000 followers using a more measured tactic. The difference in follower count could have allowed them to foster a vibrant community over six months by engaging with every reply. This estimate does not account for the additional growth that might result from fans reposting their content.

It’s unfortunate that they missed such an opportunity. Starting fresh with a new Bluesky account could have been a more strategic move, even if it meant losing their existing 6,500 followers in exchange for potentially gaining 781,250 new ones.

In 2024, I registered on Bluesky to secure my unique business username. Initially, my activity was minimal; I uploaded my logo and a banner image. Eventually, I dedicated more time to enhancing my profile.

I enriched my profile with a description, a series of short videos addressing questions from my YouTube audience, podcast episodes, and various articles from my website. Following this, I connected with 800 authors recommended by Starter Packs from other Bluesky users, which helped grow my followers to 120.

However, I then decided to unfollow everyone except for a writer friend to test whether my posts would attract attention on their own. During this period, I observed a lack of engagement for about ten days.

On Wednesday night, around 7 p.m., I noticed a surge in my follower count, gaining 100 new followers within just 90 minutes. An hour and a half later, another group of 100 followed me, totaling 200 followers at a rate of approximately one follower every 30 seconds. This influx of new followers continued throughout the night and persisted for the next four days, averaging around one follower per minute, eventually stabilizing at over 2,500 followers.

The key to this rapid follower growth was posting multimedia content. This approach appears to favorably influence the Bluesky algorithm, promoting my content more effectively. This trend aligns with common practices observed across the internet.

Future discussions will delve into the significance of multimedia content, the personal benefits I’ve gained from creating it on various platforms, and the potential rewards that others can anticipate from this strategy.

Establishing a social media algorithm to promote your profile and attract followers is the first step in building a community. Once you have followers, it is essential to provide valuable content, engage in educational exchanges, and interact with them regularly. Failing to do so may result in losing followers who were not genuinely interested in the first place.

With numerous social media platforms vying for attention, it’s crucial to recognize where your fans congregate. Some platforms may gain popularity, meaning your audience may be active in those spaces. Therefore, it’s beneficial for you to establish a presence there alongside them.

Connecting with your audience can happen in various locations, be it on social media or in-person events such as swap meets, flea markets, trade shows, or conventions. For example, Bluesky could be a promising avenue to expand your community, assuming that’s where your fans are expressing interest. To effectively connect with them, consider the following strategies:

• Engage actively with fans by replying to their posts, commenting, and interacting through likes and reposts.
• Utilize Starter Packs of similar accounts to identify and discover your audience quickly.
• Follow relevant topics and hashtags that resonate with your fans to foster relationships.
• Consistently produce high-quality content that aligns with your niche and appeals to your audience.
• Promote positive interactions and maintain authenticity in your engagements to enhance visibility.

Overall, it is crucial to embody respect and inclusiveness, respond thoughtfully to feedback, and practice patience. Building a robust community is a gradual process that requires consistent effort, and many examples illustrate both successful and unsuccessful efforts.

While blogging is significant today, its effectiveness is enhanced when an audience has already been cultivated. Blogging serves as a means of fostering community, as contemporary audiences are increasingly seeking meaningful connections. Therefore, engaging with your audience actively and creating authentic connections is essential, offering them a space where they feel they belong.

Though blogging is not the only method for building a community, it remains important. Authors excel at producing written content that resonates with audiences, making blogging a vital part of community-building strategies.

A highly effective method for building a community is through live streaming. By engaging directly with your audience during a live session, you can address their questions, discuss an existing article, or delve into topics that pique your interest. This interactive format allows for real-time feedback and invites your audience to contribute their inquiries.

From my experience with a previous YouTube channel, I conducted 223 live streams, some lasting over two hours. This duration appeared to be the optimal time for maintaining my vocal stamina.

Hosting live streams offers valuable insights into your audience’s preferences and inspires the types of topics you should explore. Additionally, this format fosters a genuine connection between you and your audience, as I observed through participation analytics from my past business experience. Engaging with your community in this manner can lead to a stronger bond and a more informed understanding of their interests.

In addition to quick insights available through blogging and community interaction facilitated by live streaming, audiences today increasingly seek more in-depth content. However, this desire for deeper understanding should not demand their full attention like traditional reading or viewing activities.

One effective way to deliver this depth is through podcasting. This medium allows your audience to engage with your voice while they perform other tasks, such as driving, mowing the lawn, or working at their desks.

To create a compelling podcast, consider expanding on the key points from your brief blog to form a comprehensive hour-long episode. If you have already hosted a live-streaming event on the same topic, you can easily repurpose that content by extracting the audio and releasing it as a podcast episode. This approach saves time and maximizes the value of the content you’ve already created.

Creating a community and delivering valuable information begins with your website articles, often called blogs. By adapting these articles, you can create a live stream and a podcast, establishing interconnected content across platforms.

One advantage of blogging is that writers possess the skills to communicate effectively. Leverage your writing abilities to engage and nurture your audience; all your efforts originate from this foundational element.

To illustrate the distinction between writing a book and producing a website article, consider the difference between film and television production. Movies usually require extensive scripts that undergo numerous revisions. In contrast, television episodes can be produced more rapidly once writers have gained experience, allowing for a faster turnaround.

In this analogy, your book represents the feature film, while blog articles serve as the weekly television episodes. Extending this comparison further, your live stream functions like a press event, and your podcast resembles a radio interview. This analogy provides an interesting perspective on how different content formats can complement one another.

To effectively engage with your audience, you must be active on their preferred social media platforms. You may want to hold off on joining specific sites until you identify where your followers are most active. For example, have you considered platforms like Bluesky, Snapchat, TikTok, or Instagram?

Once you’ve determined your platforms, take time to understand how to utilize each one’s unique features to foster connection, depth, and speed in your interactions. For instance, can you stream community events live on your chosen platform?

Bluesky allows you to share links to pre-recorded YouTube videos but does not support live streaming. Regarding video content, Bluesky excels in providing depth and speed through its video link feature, although it may not facilitate both simultaneously. Additionally, the comment section plays a vital role in building community connections.

This overview highlights the importance of understanding each platform while building your author platform. While I could summarize every social media site, it’s beneficial to empower yourself with this knowledge due to social media’s constantly evolving nature.

As a business, it is essential to establish a presence where your audience is active. Relying on a single channel is insufficient to sustain your business. Like content creators who primarily focus on YouTube, diversifying your platforms is crucial to ensuring a broader reach.

Consolidating all resources into one outlet poses a considerable risk. Just as a YouTuber depends solely on that platform, generating enough income to transition away from their day job may be challenging.

Finding an audience for your work can feel like a classic chicken-and-egg dilemma. The first step is to gather a small group of initial fans. Once they are on board, inquire about their preferred social media platforms.

Your journey begins with understanding how to attract these early supporters. As you grow your fan base, you must create opportunities for new followers to join your email list. This involves implementing a signup form on your website, a significant milestone for many authors.

Consider incorporating a survey into your fan onboarding strategy to streamline this process. After new subscribers join your email list, survey them for insights and preferences. This approach helps you understand your audience better and fosters engagement right from the start.

While I do not advise selling your email list, my previous business, which had 10,000 emails, could be valued at 100 times that, or $1 million. This highlights the importance of having legal documents to clarify the conditions under which a fan’s email address could be shared or sold.

To effectively engage with your audience, create an email list and conduct surveys to discover their preferred social media platforms. If a majority indicates a preference for a platform like X (formerly known as Twitter), it’s important to recognize that personal preferences are secondary to those of your fans. Their choice is what truly counts. Fortunately, there is often a significant alignment between your interests and your audience’s.

However, it is essential to stay alert to changes in social media landscapes. For instance, X has undergone substantial alterations under new ownership, which has shifted its dynamics. Similar transformations may occur with platforms like Facebook due to strategic decisions such as eliminating fact-checking.

Social media is constantly evolving, with new and attractive platforms like Bluesky. With countless options vying for popularity, it is crucial to identify where your fans are most active and establish your presence on those sites. Although determining the best platforms may take some time, there’s no reason to delay. You can now create accounts across multiple platforms to secure your business or brand name.

Once you have a clearer idea of where your audience engages, you can devote more effort to interacting with them on those platforms. For now, focus on reserving your usernames; the rest of the strategy can be developed later.

If you have ever watched the original Star Trek series, you might recognize the caution surrounding artificial intelligence. Episodes featuring AI often take a dark turn for the technology itself. Nonetheless, generative AI represents a unique facet of artificial intelligence that writers should be aware of and consider leveraging as a valuable opportunity.

Tesla is developing artificial intelligence technology to enable self-driving capabilities in vehicles. As a jet engine manufacturing engineer funded by the USAF, I have embarked on creating a cross-industry AI-based product that leverages flight safety data. Additionally, AI applications like ChatGPT and others assimilate vast amounts of publicly available information from the internet.

This latter category falls under generative AI. It operates through a software algorithm that forms a neural network framework like the human brain, expanding as it processes more data. Consequently, generative AI can produce new content based on its learning.

However, generative AI currently lacks the ability to create original content. Instead, it replicates existing material, and the effectiveness of this replication depends on the volume of information it has access to.

For example, if a substantial collection of a writer’s works is available, generative AI can generate text that resembles that author’s style. The larger the body of work, the closer the AI’s output may come to mimicking the original voice. Yet, it is essential to recognize that AI cannot reach the artistry of an established author, such as Stephen King.

When prompted to “write a book like Stephen King,” the resulting text might initially appear to reflect his style. However, inconsistencies and logical flaws soon become apparent. This issue is particularly pronounced in non-fiction works produced by generative AI, where the output often lacks coherence.

Such discrepancies pose a potential risk: a misled reader who purchases a generative AI-produced book could inadvertently damage the original author’s reputation.

Generative AI represents only a small segment of the broader artificial intelligence field. It is not a system like Skynet, which hypothetically controls advanced military technologies and aims for global domination. Rather, generative AI functions more like a writer, albeit with limitations in creativity and nuance.

For example, if you were to request ChatGPT to craft a story on a certain topic and then evaluate the result, you might find it lacking. The output is often technically sound but lacks the emotional depth and engagement many readers seek.

Concerns arise for writers when a generative AI system is asked to produce a narrative in the style of a well-known author, such as Stephen King, particularly from a specific work like “Christine.” While the text may still maintain a level of technical proficiency, it begins to closely mimic the writing style of that book, which raises intriguing questions about authorship and authenticity.

Using generative AI to complete your English Composition homework when your college professor explicitly prohibits it can lead to academic disciplinary actions. This is largely because the use of generative AI is often detectable.

Consider the situation in which someone publishes a new book on Amazon under the name Stephen King. This act would be considered fraudulent, regardless of whether the perpetrator is caught.

Unfortunately, individuals’ intent to make money through dishonest means is not uncommon. They thrive in an environment where legal frameworks are still adapting to rapid technological advancements. In response, platforms like Amazon are implementing new review procedures to identify and eliminate such fraudulent activities.

When engaging with generative AI, it’s important to note that simple questions often yield unsatisfactory answers. To improve the quality of the response, consider providing a more complex and detailed question. Although even well-structured inquiries might still produce inadequate results, this presents an opportunity for authors to refine and enhance the output.

Writers draw inspiration from many sources, and generative AI can certainly be included in this list. It can serve as a valuable writing tool in your creative process. So, how can you effectively use this resource to spark new ideas for your next novel or book? Ultimately, your unique voice and perspective are paramount, and starting from scratch may often yield the most authentic results.

This dynamic may shift as generative AI evolves, so staying informed about advancements is worthwhile.

Numerous generative AI services and tools are available to assist you in achieving success. For example, I utilized the Grammarly Editor to check this article’s grammar and sentence structure. Plenty of additional tools are available for website development and various other tasks.

It’s important to note that genuine artificial intelligence, as we envision it, does not exist at this point — and it may never come to fruition. The common concern is that AI could eventually make decisions that humans might disagree with.

However, at this moment, inspiration, innovation, and creativity rest solely in your hands. These are human attributes that AI cannot replicate; it can only imitate. Nevertheless, it excels at certain tasks, such as grammar correction.

Therefore, consider leveraging AI tools to help you improve in areas where you may not naturally excel. You can focus on your creative endeavors while leaving the concerns about challenging ethical implications and implications in science fiction narratives to AI developers and policymakers.
